How to Make Paper Mache Pumpkins
Materials Needed
- Newspaper
- Homemade papier mâché glue (recipe here)
- Balloons (one per pumpkin)
- Paintbrush
- Pencil
- Cutter (for making a lantern) or black marker (for making a candy holder)
- Orange paint
Types of Paper Pumpkins
- Lantern with a face cut out to allow light from a candle (LED candle recommended)
- Candy holder with the face drawn with a black marker
How to Make Paper Pumpkins with Kids
Step 1 : Prepare the Balloons
Inflate the balloons so they are roughly round. (I personally dislike this part!)
Step 2 : Apply Mache Paper
Cover the balloons with strips of newspaper dipped in the homemade glue (using a paintbrush). Ensure to apply 2-3 layers of strips crisscrossed in all directions.
Decide whether to leave the "tail" of the balloon sticking out or to cover it, as this will be the top of the pumpkin.
Step 3: Drying and Painting
Allow the balloons to dry (about a day or less depending on the weather). Once dry, cut off the top of the balloon and let the kids paint their pumpkins.
It’s best to remove any balloon pieces stuck inside to prevent them from pulling on the paper. This happened when the kids started painting: the paper became damp and began to deform due to the balloon pieces still inside. We quickly removed everything and reshaped the pumpkins.
Step 4: Adding Faces
The kids chose face designs from the internet, which I then traced with a pencil and cut out with a cutter for the lantern pumpkins.
Apply a first layer of white paint before painting a second layer of orange later. Two orange layers are also an option, but we ran short on paint and started with white!
We decided to leave them as is, but a third layer would have been beneficial.
Step 5: Final Touches
For the candy holder pumpkins, draw the face with a pencil and then with a black marker on the painted pumpkins.
And there you have it—our spooky paper mache pumpkins. A fun decoration project to do with the little ones !
You can also make these pumpkins larger for decoration or costumes. For extra style, you can add a real pumpkin-like touch with some twine.
